The Cane Companion
This project was a collaborative effort completed in my Senior BME Design course (Fall 2023). Each team member was assigned an aspect of the project to focus on (besides the written reports) based on their strengths. I was responsible for recreating a 3D model prototype and ideal final design of the Cane Companion in Autodesk Fusion360 based on research from existing similar devices/potential competitors, and input from team members.
Problem Statement
Develop a novel medical device that addresses a specific health-related need within a targeted demographic, enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life. This device should provide a unique solution that does not currently exist in the market, focusing on improving a particular aspect of healthcare for the identified group.

What is the Cane Companion?
The Cane Companion is a multifunctional medical device designed to enhance the experience of long-term cane users. This device includes the following key features:
-
Attachable Grip: The Cane Companion can be easily attached to the handle of a cane, making it accessible and convenient for users.
-
Cushioning: The grip provides cushioning to reduce hand pain, a common issue for long-term cane users who often experience discomfort due to prolonged pressure on their hands.
-
Moldable Design: The grip can be molded to fit the user’s hand perfectly. This adaptability ensures that the grip can be adjusted over time to accommodate changes in the user’s hand shape or grip style, promoting an even pressure distribution across the hand.
-
Embedded Force Resistive Sensors: Six sensors are embedded within the grip to monitor the pressure distribution across the user’s hand. These sensors provide real-time data on how the pressure is being applied, which can be crucial for identifying and addressing issues related to improper grip or uneven weight distribution.
-
Back Support and Balance Maintenance: By encouraging a proper grip and ensuring even pressure distribution, the Cane Companion helps users maintain better back support and balance, which are critical for mobility and overall health.
Benefits of the Cane Companion
-
Increased Compliance: The comfort and adjustability of the grip encourage regular use, helping patients adhere to their prescribed cane usage more consistently.
-
Pain Reduction: The cushioning and customizable grip design alleviate hand pain, making cane use more comfortable over long periods.
-
Improved Monitoring: The embedded sensors provide valuable feedback that can help healthcare providers monitor the effectiveness of the device and make any necessary adjustments to improve the user’s experience.
-
Enhanced Mobility: By ensuring a proper grip and promoting better balance, the Cane Companion can help users move more confidently and safely.
Overall, the Cane Companion represents a significant advancement in assistive technology for cane users, offering a combination of comfort, adaptability, and smart monitoring to improve the user’s quality of life.
